Whatever I type is getting posted because surely this beautiful open-air shopping center will cut off its music, lights and WiFi when the last store closes. Hm, let me make sure that I’m still connected to the Internet in another tab because I’m actually connected to Nordstrom’s WiFi and they locked their doors a little over twenty minutes ago.
I was thinking, on the walk over here, before I walked out of my house, really, that' I’d go to Barnes and Noble and write about the book I finished yesterday to see what I retained.
What did I gain as a reader from reading? What did I gain as a writer from reading a book about writing?
Girl, why did I almost type Shakespeare? What brought that man to my mind? The book was by Aristotle. Aristotle?! As in the 300-something BCE Aristotle?! Now, how in the world did I end up with a book by Aristotle in my hands?
The library.
I was walking around the library a week or so ago… oh, that reminds me, let me update GoodReads to “I’ve finished this book!” while I’m connected to WiFi since my cellular service is cut off and I’m in no rush to give Verizon the past due for which they’re asking. Constantly seeing “SOS” in the top corner of my screen and being left talking to myself when the call has dropped doesn’t make a girl want to hand over a hundred bucks! $107.44 to be specific, according to this payment reminder SMS that I received this past Saturday. It has to be more some months, I know I’ve seen upwards of the 120s.
I want a non-smart phone that does not use cobalt mined by small children in Africa risking their lives for pennies. I’ve been saying this for years, ever since I found out about the unethical manufacturing and sourcing practices of Apple, Inc. It’s disgusting, really. But, unfortunately, I can’t save the world all at once and not having a smart phone fell by the wayside while I devoted any available energy left after my own survival towards other sustainable and equitable ways of living.
Maybe my phone getting cut off is my moment. Is the time now? Can I really make the switch to a non-smart phone AND have no Internet in my home.
Child, the no Internet in my home is another story. Long story short, I signed a lease, picked up my keys, moved into my new apartment that my new full-time job allowed/forced me to get and that job said bye bitch the next day. Who’s thinking about setting up Internet at the new place that was secured by an income that’s GONE!? Yeah, setting up Internet was not a priority when there was no certainty in how I was going to pay this new real L.A. rent in my first solo apartment!
Okay, I’m squeezing as best as I can squeeze. I drank a boatload of water before leaving my house because I didn’t want to carry both my laptop and stainless steel half-gallon water bottle. Now, I have to tinkle.
I’ll share with y’all How to Tell a Story another day.
